Soar Loser Lyrics

V1

I’m not exactly commercial, this doesn’t feel like rehearsal

The movements I make, the time that it takes, it seems like reversal

I’m feeling tall and important, really Napoleon short, and

I’ve got a feeling I’m not alone, so just hold the phone, pick up the pieces while I can

Oh I thought I knew where and when and why, but I was calling an opera a lullaby

They say you’ve gotta believe and try, you know what?

CH

We can’t all fly…

V2

I’m in a serious pickle, better if I were just fickle

I’ve got this infernal hope, no joke, just cannot cope with middle

See there’s this pie in the sky and… just gotta rent me a giant

To reach up, grab me a piece oh please won’t someone talk me down

Oh I thought I knew where and when and who, but I was calling an ostrich a kangaroo

They say you’ve gotta believe and do.  Here’s my thought:

CH

It’s not quite true… It’s got me feelin’ blue

BR

Told you so and “better luck next time” truth be told there’s no reason or rhyme

Round pegs in square holes just don’t go – oh no they don’t

Maybe it’s not the right angle, maybe it’s sink or swim

Maybe you’ve got to swim in the sky – maybe that’s how you win

Maybe I’ve got the wrong angle, maybe it’s sink or swim

Maybe I’ll learn to swim in the sky – it’s not that high

Oh I thought I knew how and when and what, but I was calling a lemon a coconut

Oh I thought I knew how and where and when,

oh won’t someone just break out those violins

They say don’t stop believin’ but in what?

CH

It might give you wings,  If you find the true things

Still we can’t all fly, We just can’t all fly

But we’ve got to try,  We’ve gotta try

Crickets Lyrics

V1

Step one, step two, step I think we’re here now

Take three, plan four oh just a little more

CH

I’m standing in the middle, I’m standing in the middle

I’m standing in the middle of a field of eyes

And all I hear is…  crickets

V2

Says open invite, just open in sight, see my outside’s keepin’ me outside

A room full of souls, but they can’t see mine

They’ve got me wishin’ love were blind

CH

I’m standing in the middle, standing in the middle

I’m trembling in the middle, standing in the middle

V3

I’m here hangin’ on the air so it feels like we’re in now

Shake hands, make nice, but still I’ve gotta ask twice

CH

I’m standing in the middle, I’m standing in the middle

I’m standing in the middle of a field of eyes

I’m standing in the middle, I’m standing in the middle

I’m standing in the middle of a thousand fireflies

CH

I’m standing in the middle, standing in the middle

I’m standing in the middle of a field of eyes

Candles like fireflies, and a hundred-thousand eyes

And all I hear is… static

BR

I wonder, I wonder how the fire flies…

When all I hear is

All I hear is

My heart it beats it

Can’t catch my breath

BR

I wonder, I wonder how the fire flies…

Subsides Lyrics

Until the pain subsides

Oh…

The red red

The red red

The blood red of the sunset

Go down

Go down

Oh…

The One For Me Lyrics

V1

I’d like to take a moment now, oh to declare to this little crowd

I wrote it down, a love story brand new

So trade your pearls and pointed shoes for snowy hills and swingin’ blues

‘Cause this right here’s a fairy tale for two

He sees her in a tower far, imagines that she is a star

She soothes his senses, oh completely

There’s just no way, he starts to say but a rope of red is thrown his way

Before he knows it, he is swept away

Oh doht doht doht…

V2

So here is how it all plays out, ‘cause she had just been waiting around

And midnight found him lonesome on the shore

It was just right then their paths would cross and like Vermont Maple Sauce,

It’s slow and sweet and it slides to something more

She hears him strummin’ that guitar like catching fireflies in a jar,

He soothes her senses, oh completely

And as these things go, so they say, starts with a smolder and ends with a sway

With candlelight and snow-covered days

When he says

CH

You are the one, oh you are the one, You’re the one for me

Oh doht doht doht…

And as these things go, so they say, starts with a smolder and ends with a sway

With sunsets, and Parlez-vous Français?

CH

You are the one, oh you are the one, You’re the one for me

Oh doht doht doht…

You’re the one for me…

Looking Glass Lyrics

V1

There was a time

that’s burned into my mind

There was a time

I could not find

my name

Like broken glass

Around our feet were piercing edges

Broken glass

Around our hands were piercing edges

No hope for me

No hope to see

CH

Looking glass

I see through you to my past

Looking glass

I see through you

V2

We meet again

But we just pass and we just glance

We meet again

But this time’s quiet

This time’s calm and there is peace

The forest floor

Covered in ash, submerged in death

The forest floor

We pass again

We pass again and there is life

Quiet new life

CH

Looking glass

I see through you to my past

Looking glass

I see through you

BR

Is there anyone who hears?

Is there anyone who knows?

Is there anyone who heals…

shattered hearts, shattered minds?

Is there anyone who hears?

Is there anyone who knows?

Is there anyone, anyone?

Pass it On Lyrics

V1

Carla cared, pass it on

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Carla cared, pass it on

CH

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Oh…

V2

Lisa cried, Kohleil he tried

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Sara taught, and Jessie fought

CH

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Oh all of us are beautiful and ought to be loved

Everyone designed in the image of above

V3

Andy gave, Christine was brave

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Jon, he ran – but did you see him dance?

CH

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on

Share the beautiful stories of sunshine; of rain

Walk Papa down the lane, stroll along to this refrain

TAG

Pass it on, pass it on, pass it on…

Share the beautiful stories, share those sad songs…

We have to know, we have to grow…

So pass it on

Revelation Lyrics

V1

Instead you hollow out my shelter,

Carve for me a stronghold

Build me up a tower, it’s not quite time to be bold

Gather more reserves, call in the reinforcement

Watch, wait, listen for the hour

CH1

Hopin’ for a revelation

Waitin’ on the conflagration

Hopin’ for a revelation

Waitin’ on, waitin’ on

V2

Instead you hollow out my shelter,

Carve for me a stronghold

Build me up a tower, it’s not quite time

not quite time, not quite time, not quite time…

CH2

Stronger, stronger

If you hold me back, you’d better make me stronger

Stronger, stronger

If you hold me back come on and make me stronger

Stronger, stronger

If you hold me back, you’d better make me stronger

Oh—

BR

Feels like I’m on this glorious threshold

Who knows how long I’ll have to stand

Tell me how long to hold my breath

Tell me what more could this demand?

When I finally, finally step out

Finally reach these trembling hands,

I wonder if I’ll even remember longing for this chance

CH2

These Seeds Lyrics

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Please bless these…

V1

I shoveled hard, throwing out my back with blisters on my hands

I’ve got wagon full of seeds, can’t find a soul who understands

hard, throwing out my back with blisters on my hands

I’ve got wagon full of seeds, can’t find a soul who understands

This work is heavy heavy thinking what if we’re headed for drought

No matter how I work or how I pray, just creepin’ in with doubt

CH

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Please bless these seeds that you gave me

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Please bless these

V2

I’ve got a crew I know will come around, don’t ask me why they do

The work is hard, hard heavy and the laborers are few

I’ve got a crew I know will come around, don’t ask me why they do

The work is hard, hot, heavy and the laborers are few

They’ve got me thinking I should take a break and move it all inside

No matter how I work or how I pray there’s nowhere left to hide

CH

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Oh bless these seeds that you gave me

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Please bless these

Bless these seeds, oh bless these

Seeds—

Seeds— Oh

BR

Can only do what I can do, can only do what I can do

Can only just plant ‘em and water

Stand in the field, a blackened sky my body’s weak the ground is dry

The stars look down as if to sigh

Can only do what I can do, can only do what I can do

Can only do what I can do just plant ‘em and water

The sun, the wind, the bitter rain, the winter cold I can’t contain

In your hands lie the seasons

CH

Please bless these seeds that I planted

Oh bless these seeds that you gave me

Oh care for this land you put in my hands

Bless these seeds – you know what they need

Bless these seeds – I want to believe

Woh…

TAG

Oh let me see them grow, let me see them grow

Let me see, see, I wanna see them grow

Oh let me see them grow

Before I go

Will Remain Lyrics

V1

That one night nothing was right

We sat, we played, we couldn’t talk

Played with all our might

Life depended on it

CH

And every strum and every chord

Held us together

Held us together

Held us

V2

From one song right to the next

Frantically realizing

It was all we could do

All we could to make peace

CH

And desperate strums and desperate chords

Held us together

Held us together

Held us

V3

See-  everything, and everyone

And even earth had shaken

So everything that couldn’t would remain

TAG

Would remain…

Will remain

Tall Talk Lyrics

V1

Oh these winning conversations where I’m drowning in the details of

Who you say you are

I’ll try not to stop my ears or back away slightly while the words

Flop like fish out your mouth

Oh…

V2

See I’d like to get to know you

To pass together down this long, lonely road

But too many words choke my mouth with more, more dry cotton

I can’t cut through

I can’t know you through Your

CH

Tall talk…

BR

If the glacier of you is more above than below, won’t you let it go

When the tree of me is more dead fruit than roots, somethin’s got to go

CH

Something We Love: Musicians On Call

Musicians on Call

This Valentine’s Day, we wanted to share something we love.  We support Musicians On Call at the local Baltimore Veteran’s Hospital.  Here’s what Trina had to say about it in a recent article:

Trina Coleman, a local professional musician who plays piano, ukulele and flute is a volunteer with Musicians On Call and visits the Baltimore VA Medical Center once a month, performing for several hours at patients’ bedsides. “It’s a scary thing to be sick and away from home,” Coleman said… Coleman appreciates the “amazing people,” she meets while volunteering as a musician. “The patients themselves can be so disarmingly fun,” she adds, noting that her favorite moment came when a patient who could barely speak or move started tapping his foot beneath the blanket and knocking his knuckles on the end of the bed to the beat of her rendition of the tune, “Stand by Me.”

“That’s why I’m there. To bring light into dark places, hope into the sorrowful eyes. Unlike playing a noisy bar or even a huge show at a local venue or festival, this is real, raw and true. It can often be more rewarding,” she said.

For Trina, sharing music one-on-one with patients was a natural response after she experienced her own difficult time in a hospital stay.

Charm City Original Soul at Creative Alliance

On the final Friday of August 2014 we invited a triple bill of amazing local musicians, named it Charm City Original Soul, and set up shop in our beloved local Creative Alliance.

We invited WEAA 88.9 FM’s award-winning Carla Wills to be our host for the evening and packed the house with 150 fantastic listening folk.

Sojourne especially enjoyed having amazing back-up vocalists add depth to our live performance.

Surrounded by magnificent musicians and truly wonderful people, we had ourselves a funky, soulful, original good time.

Center Stage – An Evening of the Blues

Zac and Trina put together a Blues set for opening night of Baltimore’s Center Stage production of “Dance of the Holy Ghosts.”  A fantastic evening of music, food, Blues-era decor, and a powerfully written/acted play.  Grateful to have been a part of a beautiful evening of the arts in Baltimore.

Bluesy covers included Baby, I Love You by the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin, Superstition by the Great Stevie Wonder, and the show-stopping I’m a Woman as sung by Peggy Lee.

Our performance gained a brief mention of “gifted Blues musicians” in the Baltimore Post-Examiner review.

Mob the Town

100+ friends joined us for an AMAZING EP Release Concert at the Mobtown Ballroom.  Kane Shimabukuro, Gideon Grove opened the show with killer vocals and gorgeous melodies.  The Hot Club of Baltimore closed out the evening with a swingin’ dance party.  And Sojourne jammed a little in between…

Rodriguez

This story about fellow named Rodriguez It’s a real story.  A beautiful one.

As soon as it finished on 60 Minutes, I was pulled toward the piano.

I couldn’t help myself.  It was just too much to let pass by.

Later I watched the full documentary Searching for Sugarman

And the song was done.

He started by playing in bars staring at the wall.  He didn’t want to face the crowd.

And he had been left alone.  Fame and fortune sadly – perhaps fortunately – had simply let him be.

So… This one goes out to Rodriguez.

Soar Loser

A national Singer/Songwriter Contest inspired a few things:

A first youtube video post.

A completed band website.

And, well…  This song about losing.

Thanks for everything.  Really.

Being brave isn’t so bad after all.

A little while later, this happened:

Will Remain

Every song starts with a story…

This one comes from the toughest year of our lives.

It’s the reason we felt compelled to share the songs we’d been quietly crafting for so long.

We went through a series of traumas:  family.health.more health.more family.

We had brought our new baby home from a sleepless week after a C-section…

A week later there was an earthquake.

Another week later there was a hurricane.

And then our lives became a hurricane for a while longer.

We have been comforted by these words:

The things that can be shaken will be shaken so the things that cannot be shaken will remain.

We hope, as you face your own trials, you will be comforted too.
